Nal’ibali, the national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, was launched in 2012. A linchpin of its strategy is to help establish, support and sustain reading clubs: safe, informal spaces where children can freely arrive to engage with books and stories.

As of December 2018, Nal’ibali had 4 839 reading clubs that registered or were active. This rapid growth has been accompanied by significant variation within our reading club network. To date, Nal’ibali has not rigorously investigated the quality of reading club practice, examined factors that influence sustainability, or evaluated the outcomes for children or adults who participate in reading clubs.

Nal’ibali is seeking proposals from qualified research teams to conduct an evaluation of its reading club network. Though the evaluation should be primarily formative, we are also interested in including some investigation of outcomes at reading clubs.

Further information about the research objectives, research questions, scope, methodology and time frames is available in the Terms of Reference on Nal’ibali’s website at: https://nalibali.org/work-for-us/terms-reference-reading-club-evaluation-nationwide

Proposals should be submitted to [email protected] by 5pm on Tuesday 30 April.
