POSITION: Monitoring, evaluation, research and learning (MERL) practitioner: Social Development


Southern Hemisphere is a social development consultancy with the single-minded focus of creating meaningful

social change. Our participatory approach involves collaborating with our clients to achieve a shared end vision for

beneficiaries.

Founded in Cape Town and with the intention of assisting the transformation process in South Africa, we have over 22

years of experience and specialisation across multiple African territories with expertise in the Southern African region.

Whilst we are embedded in Africa, we are fortunate to have worked across all geographies and with multi-lateral

organisations such as the UN agencies and various Foundations.

Our strong belief is that real change is possible only when organisations have both the inspiration and clarity of

purpose to determine development solutions as well as the rigour to manage and measure the sustainability of the

change.

Building a learning organisation is at the core of what we do and to that end we focus on a fresh and creative approach

to monitoring, evaluation and learning for ourselves and for our clients.

Our core services are: Evaluation and applied research; programme design and strategy; monitoring, evaluation and

learning systems; and our training and learning hub.


Southern Hemisphere is looking for a like-minded individual to join our team as a full-time

MERL practitioner. The person will be responsible for conducting research and evaluations, supporting facilitation

and capacity building processes and should have strong project co-ordination and management skills. They would

also be required to participate in all internal organisational development initiatives.

To qualify for the position with Southern Hemisphere, the applicant must meet the following requirements:


• Master’s Degree in Evaluation, Social Sciences or related field;

• Social Development sector experience;

• Must be innovative, organised and flexible;

• Must be open to learning;

• Must be a self-starter and able to work independently;

• Have at least 2 years’ experience working in the social development or related sector

Proven experience in some or all of the following areas would be an added advantage:

• Applied research, monitoring and evaluation

• Data collection, data analysis and report writing

• Facilitation and training – virtual and in-person

• Proposal writing

• Project and fieldwork coordination

• Communication – verbal and written skills
